A Singular Super Tuscan
One of the most revered names in Tuscan winemaking, Masseto stands as a benchmark for excellence. Situated on the Tuscan Coast, near the charming village of Bolgheri, this extraordinary estate overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea, its vineyards rooted in a unique terroir. The name Masseto derives from the dense, blue clay formations—known as massi—that define the vineyard’s character and contribute to the wine’s unmistakable depth and structure.
Originally the vision of Lodovico Antinori, Masseto was established in the 1980s and has been under the stewardship of the esteemed Frescobaldi family since 2005. The estate is dedicated to producing a single, world-class wine that epitomizes the elegance and power of Merlot, with each vintage expressing the nuances of its exceptional terroir.
As Estate Director Axel Heinz eloquently states:
“At Masseto, we try to do as little as possible to the wines. Our goal is simply to capture the essence of nature and take it to the highest level. This is about an amazing, very challenging vineyard and a wine made with great simplicity. We have tanks. We have barrels. We have gravity flow. And we have people who care about the wine. That’s it. That’s our philosophy.”
This commitment to precision and respect for nature ensures that Masseto remains one of the world’s most sought-after and collectible wines, embodying the spirit of Super Tuscan excellence.
