The Singular First Growth of Pessac-Léognan
With a winemaking heritage dating back to the Roman era, Château Haut-Brion holds a unique place in Bordeaux’s history. The first recorded mention of the estate dates to 1423, and its reputation was cemented in 1663 when Samuel Pepys famously praised its wines in his diary. Today, Château Haut-Brion is revered as one of the world’s finest wines, securing its status as a First Growth in the 1855 Classification of Bordeaux—the only estate outside the Médoc to receive this prestigious ranking.
Renowned for its Grand Vin, which accounts for approximately 40% of production, Château Haut-Brion also crafts a distinguished second wine, Le Clarence de Haut-Brion, sourced from younger vines. In addition, the estate produces the highly sought-after Château Haut-Brion Blanc, alongside La Clarté de Haut-Brion, a refined white wine created from grapes shared with its sister estate, Château La Mission Haut-Brion. The portfolio also includes the Clarendelle range, inspired by the estate’s winemaking philosophy.
Spanning 53 hectares, Château Haut-Brion’s vineyards are planted with 50 hectares of red varieties and 3 hectares of white varieties. The reds, typically 14% ABV, are a masterful blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc, aged in 80% new oak to enhance their complexity and longevity. Meanwhile, Château Haut-Brion Blanc, a rare and limited-production wine, is crafted from a blend of Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc, aged in a mix of new and one-year-old oak, delivering exceptional depth and elegance.
