Petrus 1957 is a collectible fine wine from Bordeaux, France. It is bottled in 750 ml and ideal for serious collectors and top-level cellars.

Although Pétrus, like the other estates of Pomerol, has never been officially classified, it is widely regarded as the appellation’s most renowned and prestigious wine. Its rise to fame began in the late nineteenth century, when the vineyard was owned by the Arnaud family and had already established a strong reputation that continued to grow over time. Beginning in 1925, Edmonde Loubat gradually acquired shares in the family company, Société Civile du Château Pétrus, and by 1945 she had become the sole owner. She quickly understood the extraordinary promise of this small vineyard, which at the time covered around 6.5 hectares and has since expanded to approximately 11.5 hectares following the purchase of additional land from Château Gazin.

A decisive moment in the estate’s history came in 1947, when Edmonde Loubat joined forces with Jean-Pierre Moueix, a wine merchant based in Libourne. Their partnership proved highly successful, and from the early 1950s onward they elevated Pétrus to an exceptional level of international recognition. While it was already admired in France, its reputation abroad became almost legendary. Pétrus was famously served at the engagement celebration of Queen Elizabeth II, and in the 1960s it gained even greater prominence in the United States thanks in part to President Kennedy’s well-known appreciation for the wine.

Jean-Pierre Moueix later became increasingly involved in the estate’s winemaking. He acquired half of the property in 1964 and the remainder in 1972, eventually passing it on to his son, Jean-François. The Moueix family has long been one of the most influential names in Bordeaux, with ownership of several notable properties in Pomerol, including Château Trotanoy and Château La Fleur-Pétrus.

One of the defining strengths of Pétrus is its remarkable terroir, often considered unmatched in Bordeaux. The vineyard sits on soils composed largely of dark clay, rising to a plateau that reaches about 40 metres in elevation. These conditions are particularly well suited to Merlot, which accounts for roughly 96% of the vines planted there. The remaining 4% is Cabernet Franc, though only a very small proportion is typically included in the final blend. Pétrus produces only a grand vin, with any remaining production declassified, and it does not make a white wine. Harvesting is done entirely by hand, and the wine is generally matured for around 20 months in 100% new oak barrels.

Very few great red wines in the world are made almost entirely from Merlot. Yet on this singular terroir, the grape achieves extraordinary results, producing a wine of immense texture, depth, and concentration. Pétrus is celebrated for its velvety character, power, and richness, and in the finest vintages it can age gracefully for many decades.
