Chateau d’Yquem 1989 is a collectible fine wine from Bordeaux, France. It is bottled in 750 ml and ideal for serious collectors and top-level cellars. Château d’Yquem is a Premier Cru Supérieur Classé property that not only sits atop the highest hills in Sauternes, it also overshadows most other sweet wines in the world in terms of its extraordinary consistency, complexity and longevity. From a warm, small-yielding vintage, the 1989 is an immensely concentrated and powerful wine, with gorgeous waves of dried tropical fruits, apricot and mandarin that interweave with notes of honey, citrus peel, butter and crushed minerals. Though wonderful to drink now, this should easily last until 2040+.
One of the high points of this vertical tasting, the 1989 d’Yquem is a magical wine offering up a complex, refined bouquet with aromas of quince, apricot, pineapple, menthol, flowers and white truffles, followed by a full-bodied, concentrated and seamless palate, pure and vibrant structure and lively acids, concluding with a long, perfumed, ethereal finish.

A limpid orange/amber colour, deeper than the 1990. An awesome nose of honey, apricot and nuts. Very complex and rich. The palate is much more opulent than the Yquem 1990 with a heavenly cocktail of clementine, honey and citrus fruits. Good acidity and wonderful definition. Real hedonistic stuff. A delectable marmalade finish lingers for a minute in the mouth. Almost a perfect wine. Perhaps less classy than the 1990 but utterly irresistible. Tasted November 2003.
