Legras & Haas is a family-owned winery in Chouilly, in the heart of the Champagne region. Chouilly is a Grand Cru village in Côte des Blancs, just south of Epernay, that is responsible for producing some of the regions finest Chardonnay wines. Founded in 1991 by Brigitte Haas and François Legras, the estate is currently run and managed by their three sons Rémi, Olivier and Jérôme. Each of whom control different aspects of the business. They are the sixth generation of this family to grow grapes in Champagne, owning around 38 hectares here (18 of which are in Chouilly), they also buy grapes from a select few farmers in the region. This is a classic Champagne house, traditional in nature, with a quest for perfection and an
emphasis on soil preservation and terroir expression. They use first pressings only, taking the upmost care and attention in all aspects of the production of these wines. Working as a family has always been central to their approach, assisted by their house Oenologist Sébastien Struzik, all blending decisions are made together as a family. Their house styles, Intuition Brut NV and Rosé Brut NV offer lovely concentration, poise, and elegance. But their primary focus is their diverse range of Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru’s which are impeccably made, complex, serious Champagnes, of which the Grand Cru status is really reflected in the quality.
“Les Sillons” is an emotional wine and the result of twenty years of experimentation in our most unique parcel. Its name is a nod to the beauty of these landscapes, the hard work in the vineyards and our trademark perseverance. Its incredible freshness, saline texture and austere structure promise an unforgettable tasting experience filled with emotions, intensity and honesty. A rarity.
“The 2016 Extra Brut Les Sillons Chouilly Derriere Partelaine Grand Cru is fragrant with pale, ripe creamy apple flesh, chalk and wheat bran. This expressiveness is even more evident on the palate where the chalk and wheat unite into a savory, salty backdrop with a creamy yeast texture that makes the apple and lemon fruit unfold. It’s a smooth, rounded Blanc de Blancs with elegant mousse and the potential to become even rounder and smoother with bottle age. For now, the chalky umami finish is beautifully long and intense. Dosage is 4 grams per liter. Disgorged: March 2023. Drinking window: 2024-2040. 94 points”
